Frequently asked questions

Who manages 1000 Words?

This website is managed by Disruptive Media – a design and strategic communications for social change studio based in Melbourne, Australia.

It has been developed in partnership with xpand Foundation – a not-for-profit organisation that creates and supports social enterprises, who encourage social inclusion of disadvantaged people to build their social and economic participation, in a society committed to a green future in the digital age.

How does it work?

We would love you to enjoy our photographs, so we've decided to make our photo collection available to access and share. You can download web-optimised images for free and purchase, via donation, and premium photos for print. Each time you download a high-res photo, a donation of $15 is then transferred to Disruptive Media, who will purchase and plant a tree in Timor-Leste on your behalf. This is done on a monthly basis, on the 1st day of each month, and is calculated based on donations collected.

We will update the homepage with donations received and trees sold, as soon as donations are made.

This is a not-for-profit enterprise, with all monies raised going to supporting WithOneSeed and CarbonSocial projects.

How do I use this site?

There are two main ways to find images on this site. You can use the Search bar in the top right corner or go to the Library in the main menu to view our galleries.

You can search by keyword – this function is still under development and more keywords are being added every week!

Are the photographs suitable for printing?

There are two main areas of the 1000 Words photo library:

Premium photos for print – these galleries are Premium photos in their original .jpeg format – they have not been edited and are suitable for use in professional printing (subject to editing in appropriate photo editing software). They have been taken over the last 15 years, so may vary in quality, as camera technology has improved.

To find our more details about an individual image, click on the thumbnail to open in a new page, then click on the 'info' icon to review the Camera Settings. This will give you an overview of the file data, so you can see if it is suitable for printing at the size you need.

Photos optimised for web – these are smaller file sizes, perfect for sharing and posting online! They are not suitable for printing, but are free to download.
